Week 12 Storylab: Writer's Write
Week 12 Storylab: Writer's Write
The story lab that I decided to research on this week was “Advice
to Writers”. I was quite excited to read about the many different tips and tricks
a writer could use to enhance their storytelling.
The first one that caught my eye was “Don’t Buy A House” by
Philip Caputo. He brought a series of examples of part authors who have invested
in a house and it consumed them till their demise. One sentence that stood out
to me was, “if you buy anything, pay cash, and if you can’t pay cash, don’t buy
it” (Caputo). This was quite intriguing and held a lot of depth in it. We must
be grounded at all times even if fame rises.
The second story that caught my attention was, “Limitations
Mean Freedom” by Austin Kleon. He brought up a great point, and that was having
constraints for yourself. When you are left with such a wide variety of topics
or ideas to choose to from your freedom won’t be grounded. Having a certain limitation
can allow you to more freely express on that specific topic. To be creative is
to allow yourself to do something that you wouldn’t normally do. An example he
brough was “paint a painting with only one color” (Kleon). Something you wouldn’t
normally do can expand your creativity and allow more freedom.
The third story that I found interesting was, “The Useless
Days Will Add Up to Something” by Cheryl Strayed. The things at your current
moment will hold relevance and shape you for who you are. We often here peoples
becoming stories and they are very relatable because it is relatable. They had
a life before this that shaped them for who they were. The title itself was the
quote that stood out to me because they aren’t useless, they are the stories that
makes us who we are and become.
I loved reading these different pieces of advice because of their
conventional style. Things I have never really thought about!
