Introduction to a Future CPA

Introduction - Who am I?

(Norman, Oklahoma) - Taken for my senior pictures

Hey! My name is Aarushi Shankar (pronunciation: like sushi but rushi, with an aaah at the beginning). My name means “first ray of the sun” in Sanskrit. I am currently pursuing a major in Accounting and plan to graduate in December of 2022. I further plan to pursue being a CPA and working for a firm. I would say my biggest accomplishment last semester was being able to adapt to the new online environment while still maintaining a good academic standing. But enough about academics, let me tell you more about myself!

An interesting fact about me is I’ve lived in four different states - Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, and Oklahoma. Due to my dad’s job opportunities, my family and I have moved around quite a bit. I was born in Mumbai, India, but I’ve been raised in the United States my whole life. So, I guess I’m a global citizen. I am also an only child, but contrary to popular belief, I don’t get too spoilt.

In my free time I love to dance – I’ve been a dancer since the age of 4 in Bharatanatyam, an Indian Classical Dance form. As for music, I don’t like a particular genre necessarily, I listen to all types. But I would have to say my favorite artist is Ariana Grande. I also listen to a lot of Bollywood Hindi music – and my favorite artist is Arijit Singh. I also love thriller and heist type movies (tv shows) - I would recommend Money Heist on Netflix.

I am a big-time foodie! I am not a picky eater when it comes to food, and I love to try all cuisines. I would have to say Thai and Mediterranean food are some of my favorites. My comfort food though, will always be the Indian food my mom cooks at home. Along with the joy of eating food, I love to cook food as well!

I look forward to being a part of this class and learning a great deal of knowledge on Indian Epics!

  1. Hello Aarushi! Your name is very beautiful. It might be weird but I enjoy looking up names and their meanings for fun. "first ray of the sun" is so cool. I love food too! I think food is such an outlet toward other cultures and history. Some of my favorites are cajun, Vietnamese, and Italian food. I have recently gotten into cooking, and it has become a new hobby of mine. I also really enjoy your blog! It's so warm, vibrant, and colorful. :)

  2. Hello Aarushi!

I absolutely love your name! I think it is so cool that it means “first ray of the sun.” My name is Krishna, and it means “dark blue, or all-attractive” in Sanskrit. I love Bollywood music and Arjit Singh, as well. Unlike you, I am not an only child. I have an older sister, a younger sister , and a younger brother. I am not spoilt but my baby brother is, even though he is eight. I love food! I am not much of a fan for Mediterranean food, but Thai food is a favorite. I am always down to try new food.

  3. Hey Aarushi,
When I saw you are a Bharatanatyam dancer, I was so excited. I love Indian Classical Dances! I was a student of Kathak for a little over a year and a half, and it was so fun! I also love Arijit Singh, that man has such a good voice! I love how you said your comfort food is your mom cooked Indian food, I relate to that so much. I also loved the fact that you explained the meaning of your name, that is such a good idea, and I love what it means. My name is Rishikaa and it means "the daughter of a saint". I hope you enjoy this class!

  4. Hi Aarushi,
I am a big time foodie as well. Trying different foods and restaurants is incredibly entertaining for me. I would say my favorite is fresh seafood or sushi. Even if I don't enjoy a food I try, I'm still happy, because at least I was adventurous enough to try it! About Money Heist, I've heard that's a fantastic show on Netflix. I surely have to check it out given your positive review on it. Thank for sharing, Aarushi!

  5. Hi Aarushi!
I also love Ariana Grande and Arjit Singh. My favorite songs by them are "In My Head" and "Channa Mereya" respectively. What are your favorites? Thai food is my favorite food as well, but I will always have a soft spot for my mom's Indian food as well. No matter how much I say I hate it when she makes it almost every day, I miss it when I'm in Norman. I love and respect that you are a Bharatanatyam dancer--many of my friends were. I know how much time and dedication the dance takes, so I really respect that. Best of luck to your future endeavors of becoming a CPA as well!

  6. Hello Aarushi!
Lol the into had me dying. My name is Zille and so I have to explain it is pronounced (Zil-lay) all the time! OOOHOO we got an Arjit Singh fan in the house!! Growing up I watched Bollywood films and a lot of Pakistani and Indian food is similar as well. I also agree that desi food will always be my comfort food as well. You go from being an accountant to a dancer, and then to a cook. You go girl! It is really nice to meet you and I wish you the best of luck in the future! Try to have fun post-pandemic at OU and take lots of pictures as I regret not having enough at OU!

  7. Hi Aarushi! I love your name! I think knowing the meanings of names is really interesting — I have a generic white girl name, and it doesn't have any meaning but that's OK! I don't know much about dancing, but I love watching people dance. It's really interesting that you've danced since 4! I also love food, but unfortunately where I'm at there aren't many good places to eat unless you enjoy chain restaurants. I don't, so I make my own food. I hope you have a great semester!

  8. Hey Aarushi! What an exciting life! I am sure it was difficult to move so much but what an amazing way to experience different places and make friends all over the place! I have not seen Bharatanatyam before but I will investigate more after reading this post! I too am a foodie however lack most skills needed for cooking haha! If you ever need a suggestion for dinner let me know I might have a good place for you to try!

  9. Hi Aarushi,

I think that your name's meaning is very unique and It is really cool that your name has a meaning. I think that moving to 4 different states must be tough, since you have to adapt a lot and I am happy to see that you are doing really well at that. I enjoy food as well and my love for food is huge. I have not had good Thai food anywhere recently, if you can recommend some places and good stuff to try out, I will definitely give it a try.

  10. Hi Aarushi! I love your name and your names meaning! I personally love dancing as well and am with you on not having a particular genre. I pretty much listen to it all! I have been meaning to watch Money Heist on Netflix, my brother watched it and recommended it to me as well so I definitely need to watch it now! I am also a foodie as well and would say one of my favorites is Mediterranean food!

  11. Hi Aarushi! I love trying new foods as well, I think it's exciting experiencing new dishes from different cultures. Mediterranean food is definitely in my top rankings, I had a taste of it when I traveled to Greece. The summer before I came to OU I went on a trip across Europe and tried out foods from Switzerland, Italy, and even the Netherlands all in one month. I've heard a lot of good things about Money Heist, I hope to have enough time to start it soon!

  12. Thank you for explaining the meaning of your name, Aarushi! And of course your last name is so positive and encouraging too (Shiva Shankara!). Plus that is very cool that you have your birth connection to Mumbai, one of the great cities of the world. That means you will have an excuse to keep going back there all your life, and hopefully you will have lots of opportunities to do so. And hopefully to keep on dancing: it is so great that people can learn about Indian dance from all the great videos at YouTube. Maybe you will include some dance and music videos in your stories or project for class; being able to include videos in blog posts and webpages is one of my favorite things about writing for the web!

  13. Hi Aarushi!
First of all, I love the meaning of your name! It is so beautiful and uplifting. Your picture you have of yourself also fits in since its yellow! :) My name means "Ash tree meadow," so your name is way cooler. I have never heard of that style of dance before, so I am going to go look it up after I leave this comment! My husband is a picky eater, but I actually got him to try Thai food and he loved it! I was so surprised! I hope you are having a great semester!

  14. Hey Aarushi! I also love to cook! Honestly, there are only a couple of things I can think of that I don't like, so I'm fundamentally down to try anything at least once! Thai food is one of my favorites as well. The massaman curry at Sweet Basil is to die for. My storybook is based around cooking, so I will hopefully be getting better at Indian cooking this semester!

  15. Hi Aarushi! I love the dress you are wearing in your picture! You sound like such a cool person--I think anyone who could move as much as you have and still have your life on track must be made of tough stuff. I have lived in Oklahoma my whole life but will be moving for a job after I graduate this Spring, so hopefully I handle it as well as you! I thought it was really interesting learning about your dancing. I am definitely not a dancer, but I do love to watch dance! Have a great semester!

  16. Hi Aarushi! Let me just say, I do the exact same thing to help pronounce my name. I go by Ish, which is like fish without the f, in the same way you do sushi but with rushi! What a cool coincidence. I also love Thai and Mediterranean food; both are so healthy and delicious. I’ve been trying to learn how to cook, but I can definitely see why you love it.

  17. Hi Aarushi,

I think it is very impressive that you were able to adapt so well to the new online learning environment. It was a struggle for me at first, but was able to learn more and more over time. I also enjoy to cook as well, but have never tried Indian food. A lot of my friends like to go to Taste of India, and will have to try it with them pretty soon. I thought it was interesting to see that you have lived in 4 different states. I love to travel and my goal one day is to try to go to all 50 states. Good luck with everything!

  18. Hey Aarushi!

I think it was really cool that you explained the meaning of your name to us (also a very cool name). I also am a big time foodie and Thai and Mediterranean food are the bomb! The Gyro Hero place here in Norman makes great Gyros if you like that sort of thing. I think it's awesome that you have so much love for your cultural such as Indian food, Bollywood music, and classical dance. I hope you have a great rest of the semester!

  19. Hello Aarushi!
I also am a big a foodie! whether its cooking it or eating it, I am always in the mood for food. I also have to agree that my comfort food will always be my moms cooking, just something about eating your moms cooking will really bring you comfort.
I have only ever lived in Oklahoma so I am a little unaware of what it is like to live in different states. Do you have a favorite that you have lived in?

  20. Hello Aarushi,
Congrats on almost getting to graduation, that is super exciting! Like you I am also a huge foodie. I am always open and find myself wanting to try new foods. I would have to say one of my favorite dishes to eat is Pho. I find it to. be super comforting especially during the cold fall and winter months. I hope that you have a good and healthy rest of your semester!

  21. Hi Aarushi! I love that you shared the meaning of your name with us. It’s a super cool and gorgeous name. My name literally means “Ireland,” which I’m sure is a fantastic place, but it made name-meaning assignments in elementary school kind of boring, haha. It’s awesome that you like to dance. I’ve never been a dancer, but I have a lot of respect for the physical strength and artistic understanding that it takes to be a good dancer. I’m glad that you enjoy doing it! I hope you continue to do well in your classes and finish the semester strong!

  22. Hi Aarushi! Everyone else is saying it but I love your name and the meaning of it is so cool. I love knowing what people's names mean. Mine is Hebrew, the female version of John I believe, and means "God is gracious" or sometimes I read that it means "God's gift", which I think are both pretty cool meanings. Contrary to yourself, I'm a pretty picky eater. I get it from my mom, but as I get older I make it a point to try new things. I do really like the Indian food I've tried (naan bread is the best), the two dishes I like are Khorma and Butter Chicken.
