Reading Notes: Tiny Tales Mahabharata, Part A

While reading Part A of the Mahabharata it was quickly known that most characters introduced would be interrelated one way or another. I am sure this is true of most stories, but quite evident in the Mahabharata. One main thing I noticed is, many of the Kings and Princes had children with women they met before they were married. Another repetition seen was the wives of the Kings and Princes were not able to fulfill the desire of an heir to the throne – a son. Even if a son was born, they must not have any “disability” or be born into a servant family. Many promises that were made were also held true. For example: Draupadi like Sita, had a competition for her “to-be” husband – an arrow competition. This was won by Arjuna – one of the five Pandavas. Yet, apparently in a previous lifetime’s promise, all five of the men were going to be her husbands. Because of this, Draupadi had to split her time with each of the Pandavas – one year without interruption. I found it so interesting that the theme of “karma” was also present. If someone “messed” with another individual and/or their family, they would later be face to face repenting for their mistakes. On the other hand, if you are good to another individual and/or their family they will help you. Duryodhana, was continuing to rid the Pandavas and their happy life. Each character had been put through situations that they “deserved” for whatever mistake or good deed they have done for society. The first part itself held the main foundation of the twists and turns that will follow throughout the entire Mahabharata. I also enjoyed reading about Vyasa – as he was a crucial part in the Mahabharata and the one who composed it as well.
